Remote Alaska recycles more than 11 tons of aluminum cans in 2022

Congratulations to our ALPAR Flying Cans participants! They sent in 21,476 pounds of used beverage cans (UBCs) via members of the Alaska Air Carriers Association in 2022. UBCs are routed to the Anchorage Recycling Center, which then sends reports to ALPAR, which in turn pays the market rate for UBCs quarterly.

And thanks to Coca-Cola Bottling of Alaska & The Odom Corporation, three rural communities received funding to purchase can crushers (either small hand-operated or larger mechanized versions). Those receiving funds in 2022: Native Village of Kongiganak IGAP ($5,000), Holy Cross Village IGAP ($175), and the Louden (Galena) Tribal Council IGAP ($130).

UBCs are infinitely recyclable. The effort keeps a valuable resource out of local landfills and the funds earned are often re-invested in local IGAP Environmental Departments for community outreach and training. Keep up the good work Alaska!
