Rural Alaska is crushing it!

Congratulations to our ALPAR Flying Cans participants! They sent in 4,659 pounds of used beverage cans (UBCs) via members of the Alaska Air Carriers Association in the first quarter of 2023. UBCs are routed to the Anchorage Recycling Center, which then sends reports to ALPAR, which in turn pays the market rate for UBCs quarterly. Participants also sent in 414 bags of plastic beverage bottles, which also went on to recycling.

And thanks to Coca-Cola Bottling of Alaska & The Odom Corporation, several rural communities receive will funding to purchase can crushers (either small hand-operated or larger mechanized versions). Those receiving funds in 2023:

  • Nunapitchuk IGAP: $2,825
  • Native Village of Diomede: $1,125
  • Orutsaramiut Native Council: $800
  • Chuathbaluk Traditional Council: $250.

UBCs are infinitely recyclable. The effort keeps a valuable resource out of local landfills and the funds earned are often re-invested in local IGAP Environmental Departments for community outreach and training. Keep up the good work Alaska!
