Exciting news for Nome! Kawerak Inc is stepping up to meet a longstanding need with the opening of a new recycling facility in Nome—and now it’s one step closer. The Nome Common Council has approved a lease to use the former Monofill site, located near Nome Airport, including the building and 32,705 square feet of land. The lease runs from Jan. 1, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2044, at a nominal annual rent of just $1! The decision was made in order to address this need for the common good of the community of Nome.

Our 4th quarter of our Flying Cans/Flying Bottles program shows a decrease from the previous year. The biggest contributor in Q4, however, was Chevak—they sent in 684 pounds of used beverage cans while Teller sent in a whopping 128 bags of used plastic beverage bottles!
Seven groups applied or re-started the Flying Cans program in 2024: Nightmute, Ruby, Aleknagik, White Mountain, Beaver Village, Newhalen and Hooper Bay. We look forward to seeing how much they send in for recycling.
In total, 38 communities (off the road, rail or river system) participated in this program in 2024 with support from members of the Alaska Air Carriers Association (ACAA).
