Flying Cans/Bottles communities beat Q3 totals year over year!

Third quarter of 2025 shows the amount of used beverage cans (UBCs) sent in for recycling by remote communities beating last year’s totals. The number of plastic bags filled with used plastic beverage bottles for recycling was also up (see graphic).

The biggest contributors in Q3:

  • Orutsaramiut Native Council (Bethel area): 366 pounds of UBCs (and winner of 2023 can crusher grant)
  • Curyung Tribal Council (Dillingham): 273 bags of plastic beverage bottles

While 36 communities sent in materials in Q3, records show 49 communities have participated thus far in 2025 with support from members of the Alaska Air Carriers Association (AACA). Additional support, in the way of grant funds to purchase electric and hand-operated can crushers, is provided by Coca-Cola Bottling of Alaska/The Odom Corporation and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.

With winter on its way, we look forward to documenting the final months of adding to the totals of materials moved on to recycling.

Great job rural Alaska!
