From April 1 through April 28, Anchorage Recyclers will be competing in the national City Recycling Challenge sponsored by the US Conference of Mayors, the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services, Novelis and Keep America Beautiful. It’s easy to join in the competition for Anchorage. Just recycle your cans in your curbside or at any drop off site at the Anchorage Recycling Center, Anchorage Regional Landfill, CARR’s drop-off or school drop sites, Total Reclaim on Industry Way, Hilltop Auto in Eagle River or Schnitzer Steel in Anchorage and your cans will be counted. ALPAR Can-Do Kids at the Anchorage Recycling Center on Dowling will earn an extra 5 cents in April and are entered to win great prizes! Let’s do this, Anchorage!

Anchorage recycles 8,000 trees despite the weather!

Christmas Trees become mulch for trails and gardens.

Great job, recyclers! You recycled 8,000 Christmas trees after the holidays, kept them out of the landfill and put the chips to good use. ALPAR, Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services and CARRS/Safeway teamed up to bring this program to residents in Anchorage and Palmer. Thanks to our great media sponsors: Anchorage Media Group Stations like KOOL 97.3, MIX 103.1, KBEAR, KFQD, and KHAR, GCI Cable, Anchorage Daily News, Channel 2, Channel 11 and Channel 13 and 4! Fairbanks and Juneau have started Christmas Tree Recycling programs as well! Recycling continues to grow!

NO TREE DEBRIS FROM STORM DAMAGE, PLEASE!!!

Christmas Tree Recycling at CARRS is NOT the place for tree or wood waste other than INDOOR CHRISTMAS TREES.

The recent wind storms have led to a large number of downed trees and folks are considering where to take the debris. There are options but the Christmas Tree Recycling program at the CARRS/Safeway stores is not one of them. Store parking lots and the Christmas Tree Recycling program cannot handle any tree or wood debris other than indoor Christmas Trees.

ALPAR would like to remind everyone to properly dispose of wind-fallen trees.
Here’s some suggestions:
* Keep debris on site until the ANCHORAGE WOODLOT opens in May.
*Take tree debris to the ANCHORAGE REGIONAL LANDFILL on HIland Dr. The Central Transfer Station takes pickup size loads of brush that are cut into eight foot lengths or shorter. Larger loads of brush and land clearing waste are accepted at the landfill. Regular rates apply.
*Use for firewood or give away to friends and family.
*Call a tree service for a bid to chip material on site and haul away.

Remember to always secure your load!

Christmas Tree Recycling Starts Dec. 28th

Christmas Tree Recycling for Anchorage and the Valley runs from December 28 through January 15. Bring your bare (LIVE!) trees to your CARRS – Safeway store in Anchorage, Eagle River or Palmer and drop off in the parking lot (look for the sign!) No wreaths, please. The wire backing is too difficult to remove. And please remove and recycle your plastic bags at the recycling center. Trees are turned into fragrant wood chips and donated to beautify public trails and gardens. This program brought to you by ALPAR, Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services, CARRS/Safeway and our media sponsors; MIX and KBEAR, Anchorage Daily News and GCI. If you want to recycle your artificial tree, consider donating to Bishop’s Attic, Value Village or Salvation Army. Ho Ho Ho! (Don’t forget to recycle your paper gift wrap and reuse those boxes, ribbons and foil wrap next year!)

Today, Alaskans across the state are celebrating the act of recycling. From the Anchorage School District’s recycling display at the Education Center (check out this cool #1 PET bottle Polar Bear) to Hooper Bay School’s aluminum can drive to Interior Alaska Green Star’s electronic recycling event and volunteer appreciation party, there are events happening today all over Alaska that show why recycling matters. Congratulations to Green Star for winning the $500 drawing for registering your event and don’t forget Can-Do Kids can take their cans to the RockTenn Recycling Center in Anchorage, get an extra 10cents/pound for their cans and they might win a bike today. Host an Event for America Recycles Day – Win $500!

America Recycles Day and Anchorage Recycles Day is coming up soon and we want to show the other states just how enthusiastic Alaskans are about recycling. So, here’s your challenge: Organize and register a recycling event or promotion at the America Recycles Day website and ALPAR will automatically enter you/your office/business/organization/etc. in a drawing to win $500 to help you celebrate. To win the $500 you must register your event by November 1, 2011. You will have fun, too, with lots of help and ideas from the ARD Organizer Guide.

Here’s a few ideas:

Host an office “recycling lunch” to celebrate recycling in the workplace.
Do a recycling challenge in your school, business, or community to increase the volume of recycled materials collected whether it be one item or all the items collected in your community.
Host a recycled art contest or display in your school / organization
How about a Recycling Flashmob!
Add a new material to your recycling program and kick it off on ARD.
Challenge your neighborhood to sign up for curbside recycling.
Host a community outreach table at a local business to spread the word about recycling.
Anchorage kicks off a juried recycled art show called revAmp, Recycle, resTore (ART) beginning on November 4th
Do outreach on your website, Facebook page or media advertising that highlights your commitment to recycling.

ALPAR. Muni Solid Waste Services, Green Star and Central Recycling Services are hosting a juried recycled art exhibition in celebration of America Recycles Day – November 15, 2011. Visit revAmp Recycle resTore for all the details. Submissions for Recycled Art are due by September 28, 2011. Art will be displayed starting on First Friday in November.

Garden Pot Event Recycles Over 2 TONS of Plastic!

Busy Day for Recycling!

Last Saturday, (August 20th) Anchorage’s dedicated gardeners brought in over 2 tons of plastic pots, trays and cell packs for recycling. 3,128 pounds of plastic pots were baled and shipped to Seattle to be recycled into new stuff and over 1,200 pounds taken away by gardeners and greenhouses for reuse! Very cool, thanks to a great partnership between ALPAR, Alaska Waste, RockTenn Recycling Center and the Alaska Botanical Garden. Thanks to Anchorage Media Group and all their great radio stations for helping us get the word out! Alaska’s gardeners recycle, too!
